Eight-Room, Story-and-a-Half
Bungalow
I T may seem strange that the bungalow, a supposedly one-story
building, more often than not has two or three rooms on the second
floor. By
working them in "under the roof" some nice rooms are
procured without much extra cost. In the design illustrated on
this page there are four large rooms on the main floor, and four
more up stairs. The total dimensions
of this house are 39 by 32 feet. It is an economical design to
build.
This bungalow is constructed from the ground up to the second story
window sills of broad boards, one inch thick, and laid ten inches
to the weather. They are unpainted and stained brown with creosote
oil, producing an interesting rough surface. The gable
ends of the bungalow and the sides of the roof dormer are covered
with yellow cement plaster. The square porch pillars are built
up of dark brown rough texture brick which harmonizes well with
the creosoted boards. The
window frames, cornices and rafter ends are painted white.
This is a design that has been very popular. It carries a feeling
of cordial hospitality and hominess.
A glance at the floor plans will show the desirable arrangement
of the interior. The rooms are large, the big living room with
its screened porch being one of t' e specially attractive features.
As in all true bungalows, there are a good many pieces of built-in
furniture provided for.
The entrance from the broad front porch is at the center into an
outer vestibule and from there into a square reception and stair
hall. At the left is the large living room, and at the right.
the dining room. Ceiling beams are indicated for this apartment.
Directly back of the dining room is the butler's pantry, and back
of that, the kitchen and supply room. The
refrigerator in this room is placed so that it can be iced from
the back porch. 'The
iceman doesn't need to track across the kitchen floor.
The stairway shows a good arrangement; a stairway going up from
the back hall joins onto the main stair half way up. On the second
floor are four good sized bedrooms, besides a sleeping porch. An
ample amount of clothes closet space is secured.
